       Articling Students (Kamloops and Kelowna)

 

 

The Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic (the “Society”) is currently recruiting for two Articling Students to join our team of professionals at our Kamloops office, to help with the Kelowna and Kamloops offices with a preferred start date aligned with either the May 2026 or September 2026 PLTC sessions. The Society is committed to providing access to justice to the Okanagan Thompson area by providing free, quality legal services and legal education to the community using a trauma-informed approach. The Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic is committed to a client-centered model that removes barriers to justice for gender-diverse individuals, Indigenous communities, and other marginalized communities.


Under the supervision of the clinic Staff Lawyer and/or the Executive Director of the Society, the Articling Students will assist with providing legal services and education for the Society. Working independently and with minimal supervision, the Articling Students will draft pleadings, legal research memoranda, and correspondence; conduct client intake and interviews; attend court; research, establish, and deliver public legal education sessions including webinars. The Articling Students will work primarily in the areas of employment law, human rights, judicial reviews, and debt law. Articling Students must remain in good standing with the Law Society throughout their articles.


Candidates must be eligible for admission to the Law Society of British Columbia’s article program and must possess a Juris Doctor or equivalent. Experience working with marginalized communities is an asset. Demonstrated administrative, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills are essential to this position.
Compensation: $4000 to $5000 per month (including during PLTC), as well as all PLTC fees.


All successful candidates will be required to provide a Police Information Check (PIC) as a condition of employment. (Note: This is not required as part of the application process; however, a PIC will be required upon consideration for employment.)


These positions are one year full-time, based on at least 35 hours per week, primarily Monday to Friday. On occasion, candidates may be required to work an evening and/or weekend.

Legal Assistant-

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be joining a team responsible for providing free legal services to the Okanagan Thompson areas with offices located in Kamloops and Kelowna

The Legal Assistant provides administrative support and assistance to the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s), the Executive Director and others in both the Kamloops and and/or Kelowna office as requested. Under the guidance of the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s) the Legal Assistant will assist with the delivery of legal services in the areas of litigation by: filing court documents, drafting, preparing and proofreading legal, administration documents and correspondence, compiling information and other various tasks as required by the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s) and Executive Director. The Legal Assistant will perform administrative tasks including maintaining, organizing and filing documents and correspondence, responding to client inquires and conducting follow-up meetings, being responsible for maintaining the Clinic Staff Lawyer(s) and Executive Director’s calendar, calls from clients, directing clients to the appropriate staff member or referring to outside organizations or agencies. Other general administrative and reception related duties may also be assigned.

Candidates will have legal assistant experience, paralegal diploma or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training in an administrative or paralegal function, preferably within a legal environment. Demonstrated administrative, organizational and written and verbal communication skills are fundamental to this position. Candidates must be proficient with Word, Excel and BC Online. A full privilege Driver’s License for the Province of BC is required.

This position will allow for a ‘hybrid’ work arrangement whereby work can be performed from a remote location with the understanding that there will be times when attendance at the Kelowna and/or Kamloops office(s) may be required to provide coverage for other legal assistants.

Compensation - $60,000-$70,000 annual

This position is based on 35 hours per week and will be primarily be Monday to Friday. On occasion, candidates may be required to work the occasional evening and/or weekend.
